Post Surgery Sudden hair loss!

by Samantha Campbell
(Caboolture,QLD, Australia)

Hi I’m a 29 year old Female (will be thirty in May). I have been having rapid hair loss for around 6-7 weeks now. My hair is visibly thinning and it’s really worrying me.

I have seen my local GP, and she did blood tests for thyroid, iron levels, FBC, and some others which I can’t remember. They all came back normal.
I had gallbladder removal surgery 4.5 months ago, and what was supposed to be day surgery turned out to me staying in for 4 days as it was more infected than first thought. Besides that, I am also suffering from an anxiety disorder.

I have not seen a dermatologist yet as I am getting married in 2 weeks and cannot possibly afford it till after then.

Do you think this could be from my surgery/anxiety? And do u think I will have enough hair for my wedding in 2 weeks. (I’m guessing I have lost around 40% of my hair in the space of 6 weeks) I have notice seem to lose a lot when I wash my hair anywhere between 100-200 hairs.

But I can also just run my fingers through my hair and get like 10 or so hairs every time.
How long until this will stop and is there any vitamins/supplements I can use to help. I use Nioxin shampoo.

Thank u so much

Dear Samantha,

Thank you for sharing your story with us and congratulations on your upcoming marriage. As far as I know your condition is pretty common especially when you go through a stressful event like a surgery. The sudden hair loss is known as Telogen Effluvium and is usually abrupt and expected in majority of post surgery cases.

There isn’t much that you can do it’s hard for me to say when exactly it will stop but I can tentatively say most of this hair loss is only temporary and the excessive hair loss will stop after a few weeks from the initial starting period.

As your hair loss is caused by an internal shock, no medications can actually prevent or reduce it because the hairs are already in the resting phase and ready to fall out anytime. Therefore, there is nothing that you can do but just conceal it for the time being.

What I can suggest is to ask your hair stylist to temporarily conceal the obvious balding areas for your wedding and I am pretty sure they are very skilled with that. Besides that, you can also try a hair loss concealer like Toppik to help conceal your hair loss. It looks really natural and no one can actually tell that you are using it. It’s really a life saver at times like this!

Toppik is available via our Solve It! Store and so with tons of other hair loss products…check it out!

Alternate cure claimed called balayam helped me immensely
by: steam

I was also suffering from acute hair loss leading to baldness. I was also very depressed. Then somebody told me that somebody called SK is claiming to have found a free cure for hair loss and baldness, the main point was that his website was absolutely free and he was suggesting a method of doing a simple exercise without asking for a penny. I tried hoping against hope. But to my great surprise, my hair loss has stopped within 15 days. I am really surprised. Earlier when I used to comb my hairs, at least 10-15 hairs would come with it. But now only 1-2 hairs come out when I comb. Amazing. I'm hoping that i may get my lost hairs back as is claimed by him. I suggest one must try it as it is absolutely free. No money is being asked by the website.
