Please help me

(Syd, Australia)

I’m a 25yr old healthy female. For the last 2 years I've noticed that I've been loosing 'more than average amounts' of hair either in the shower or in my brush. Within the last year I have also noticed a significant change in my hair density. Hair becoming much thinner.

Over the last 6 months though it has gone into over drive. Losing tons of hair in the shower, even more when blow drying it. Then much more through out the day when I lightly run my hands through hair. Over the last 3 months the hair loss is ongoing and doesn’t seem to be getting replaced with any new hair. I've become rather worried as I've recently noticed that when my hair is wet, you can almost 'see through' to my scalp, (mostly around the crown area).

Last month out of fear I went to my doctor who referred me to a dermatologist. After doing blood tests etc., he told me It's PATTERNED HAIR LOSS. Put me on the 'the pill' to regulate my hormones as they are apparently not quite right. Also told me to start using Rogaine, men’s strength. So I've been doing it for almost 4 weeks now and I’m more depressed than ever.

I guess in my mind I thought once I started these treatments I would see results over night. But all I'm seeing is more of my hair falling out. Sometimes I just stand in the shower and cry. I know it's vain of me, but it's starting to really affect me psychologically. I'm constantly trying to 'fix' my hair through out the day to cover the areas where I know my scalp tends to show.

I’m avoiding washing my hair, actually even touching it in fear of causing more to fall out. At this point I really can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. Is there ANYONE out there who has experienced or knows of anyone that has experienced this or something similar?? What was the outcome? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers :)

Editor’s Comments,

Hi there. Thanks for sharing your hair loss story with us. Patterned hair loss or genetic hair loss is also quite common with females especially if yours is related to hormone imbalance.

There are always light at the end of the tunnel and you should have a good chance or recovering most hairs that you have lost when you have stabilized back your hormone levels. Patience is the key to hair growth as it takes months for your hair to grow back.

In the meantime, try to stick to a healthy diet that helps with your recovery. Some exercises that destresses and relaxes your mind like meditation or tai chi can bring positive effects to your health and your hair. Good luck.
