Migraine, NOR QD...and hair loss.

Hey all...nice to have found this.
I'm 44. I have always had massive hair; long, thick, Native American hair....
I have also been a migraine sufferer for the last ten years. I can easily lose three days or more a month to black outs and pain....

I did a great deal of research and endured a lot before I discovered that my migraines were a result of the estrogen drop before my periods, and then the climb back up after them. My skin was also a wreck, and I was moody as hell.

A doctor in New England, (can't recall her name) had done research around continuous use of birth control to control migraines. Three months on, one month off to have a period. So I tried it. But the pill I was using was Estro/Progrestrogen combo. So I still had the drop in estrogen and many days of pain. Then my dr. switched me to Nor QD. I have taken it the last two years and it has been a GODSEND. My migraines, while not gone, have become more like normal headaches, and I rarely miss work for them. *(used to be upwards of three days off a month...not good when you teach high school.)

BUT about six months ago, I noticed gobs of hair coming out. I thought, OH WELL must be peri-menopause time for me! But it was WAY more than normal. Even my hairdresser commented and advised I start using Nioxin to help. So far it hasn't.

I'm freaked out that my Indian hair will all be gone by summer if I continue onward with the NorQD, but I'm also freaked out it'll get WORSE if I stop---and the migraines and very bad skin will return. What is a woman to do? It's making me quite depressed. I'd be ok if I thought my hair was coming back in, but it's not. Seems like perfectly happy groups of hair fall out with each washing, and again, I fear my once thick wonderful hair will be gone by this time next year. Advice? Help??? Stop the pill? Deal with the headaches? (Keeping in mind I tried everything from acupuncture, to progestin. crèmes, to chanting and meditation to cure the headaches!)

Dear Kelly,

Looks like you are in a crossroad here because you either continue with NorQD or quit it which might cause your migraine to return. NorQD or its full name Norethindrone Oral Contraceptive is a birth control pill that can cause multiple side effects and hair loss is definitely one of them. That is simply because NorQD can lower and turn your body hormones upside down.

As most hormonal altering drugs like birth control pills, hair loss is the usual problem most women face. However, since the drugs that you use are fairly important to control your migraine (which I believe is more serious issue than hair loss) I strongly suggest that you should continue with the medication until you find a viable alternative because migraine can really affect your quality of life in the long run.

Sometimes it takes a few years for your body to accept the birth contraceptive and adapt to it. If your body can accept and regulate to this medication, your hair loss should reduced over time. As I am no expert with handling migraines or know anything much about it besides the terrible time it can give you, you should find a professional like a Neurologist for professional opinion and maybe other alternatives to handle your migraine before quitting this medication.

In the meanwhile, you might want to try to take some supplements like Vitamin B Complex and some hair food like Viviscal for women to counter the effects of the birth control pill. Due to the fact that your condition is caused by the birth contraceptives, the effectiveness of these supplements can vary depending on your body. For serious cases, you might want to look into Minoxidil 2% for women which can be beneficial for hair growth as well. Another alternative is trying to cut your hair short, that way it’s much manageable and can help reduce the appearance of thinning.

The choice rests with you entirely on whether to discontinue the treatment for migraine or save your hair but if I were you, I will keep up with the medications till I find a reliable alternative to combat the migraine effectively. I hope you well and all the best.

Me too!
by: Anonymous

Hi, I get a migraine a week (yes, 3 'lovely' days) and I also have alopecia (hair falling out). I get needles poked in my head monthly to stop the bald patches getting worse (steriod). I stopped (or looked for alternatives) to all medications that can bring on alopecia. Have you tried 'Imigran' for your migraines? They halt the migraine (usually) completely for 8 hours, so you are able to work or play. Good luck, but try and hold onto your hair.

Jahnna Duffey did NOT order from this site!!!
by: The REAL Jahnna Duffey

The January 2009 review from "Jahnna Duffey" is a fraud! I am Jahnna Duffey and, as you can imagine, it is not a common name! Someone used my name without my permission. I do not suffer from hair loss and had never even heard of this site until I Googled my name!
