Is my Hair Loss Telogen Effluvium ?

I’m a student in my last year at 6th form and about 3 months ago I started noticing hair loss. I mean, this was about November last year, so I was quite stressed out about my exams and leading up to my exams, ironically my hair loss followed this same pattern, it got so bad that during my exams I got some caffeine shampoo, which I have been using now for about a month to no avail. Immediately after my exams where other, my hair loss seemed to die down a bit, until I started stressing about the results that are yet to come through. I don’t know what this is and I don’t know what to do about it.

My older brother is 25 and he has MPB, but I can’t be certain if I have it as well because we don’t share the same father. But the hair loss is quite extreme, about 25 minuets ago I took a shower and I found about 20 hairs that had come out,

Sitting here talking typing now, I can run my hand through my hair and find about 3 hairs in between my fingers. But what I find strange is the nature of the hair loss. If you didn’t know about my hair loss you would think my hair is quite thick as it is considerably long, but if I part my hair I can see how thin it is, especially on the sides of my head.

That doesn't make sense; normally MPB is on the crown and corner hairline regions, but my thinning looks nothing like that. In addition, it’s only recently that my hair has become really greasy, which doesn't make sense either. I’m going to cut it short soon, to try and forget about all the hairs that seem to come out so easily, I can’t understand it, and its really stressing me out.

Editor Comments,

Hello there,

There is a chance that you might be facing with Male Pattern Baldness because most cases of MPB starts somewhere around your age after you hit puberty. I assume that you should be around 17-19?

If you notice that your hair is thinning on the sides or also the front part, it’s most likely MPB. Usually during this phase, you will notice oilier hairs and acne coming out due to the changes in the hormones inside your body.

During this phase of your life, your body should have a surge of the male hormone Testosterone that will develop into DHT, the main cause of Male Pattern Baldness.

What you can do is to observe your condition to see whether it’s receding, if yes, starting treatment early will help reduce hair loss. Good luck.
