I was diagnosed with TE.......

I was diagnosed with TE about a month ago. Let's rewind about 6 months when this whole thing started. I'm 28, athletic, and have hypertension that is controlled with medication. My gyn doc decided that she wasn't going to renew my prescription for Ocella because my blood pressure was out of control.

So...she hyped up a birth control method called Mirena (IUD). She claimed it was a quick, simple, reliable fix. First off, I have no children and insertion hurts like HELL. I had a really heavy period for about a month after the insertion after that the problems really started. My skin was horrible and really oily and so was my hair.

I went in and demanded they remove it, so they did. About two months later I got back on Ocella, about 1.5-2 months into using it my skin was awful again I had breakouts on my face, chest, back, and neck. I stuck it out and it went away.

After the acne stopped the hair loss started. I notice it mainly when i wash my hair and brush it. It has the bulbs attached at the ends when it comes out. I find it everywhere! Everyone treats me like I'm crazy, "Your hair looks good" "you look the same" they say. I know my body, and I've never lost hair like this. I went to see my Dr. and he ran blood work, it all came back fine. So he sent me to a dermatologist, he asked the normal questions and did the hair pull test.

He suggested I take Biotin, and come back in 6 weeks for a follow up. I'm so lost, I just want my normal hair back. I've considered stopping all of my medications and seeing if that helps, but I'm afraid that the hormone change might make it worse If you have had any experiences similar to mine please share.....

Editor Comments,

Hello there Angela,

Has the hair loss subsided or are you still losing substantial amount of hair? By right, it seems that you are facing with a period of sudden hair loss due to Ocella that you just started back. As your body starts to readapt to the meds, it might trigger a response like acnes and some hair loss.

If that is the case, the hair loss will usually stabilize over time. Follow your dermatologist’s advice and try to relax and you should be fine. I won’t suggest any further treatments if your condition is only temporary.

TE Victim

I am in my early 70's & have also been diagnosed with TE after several blood tests and a visit to a dermatologist. Presently, I am applying Clobetasol Propionate (topical solution) to my scalp once a day in an attempt to shock the cycle and also taking Biotin 250 mcg daily. I previously had a head of thick, fine, healthy hair. The hair commenced falling in Dec. My doctor has suggested that I try and forget about it & the hair will start growing within 6 months. It is now the end of April and I feel that the falling of hair is not as severe. I'm praying for regrowth!
