Crash Dieting Dangers

Crash Dieting Dangers

About last Spring I suddenly had clumps of shedding hair in the shower and it was no stopping for about two months. The thinning was fast and quick. I had been dieting...well actually skipping meals a lot and in the previous year I lost about 30 or more pounds with dieting and exercising. I had been afraid to get it back so I started not eating enough I think.

Anyway.....I had a strange virus in February and it gave me a severe headache that no amount of Motrin could get rid of for three days! Right after that I had a terrible bout of the flu and was in bed for three days unable to function. Took me awhile to feel ok after it but I did. The shed came about two months later.

When it first came I panicked and felt like I was going have a nervous breakdown. In fact I did crash and got into a tailspin of gloom and doom! Went to doctors and instinctively I started eating more and filled up on red meat!!! Blood tests came back good and found a thyroid nodule but the thyroid levels were all ok and so were the hormones. I am 41 and I had been having per menopause symptoms prior to this but never any hair issues. In fact, since this mess I have not gotten any hot flashes and am wondering if my menstrual abnormalities were even part of the not eating enough issues.

Both of my dermatologists both said it looked like TE and not FPB or anything as it was sudden and diffuse and a lot in the back and sides. I have regrowth and my shedding is way down but I still feel such anxiety over how long it is taking to have full hair again. I can say that I have been shedding normal since August and there are fluctuations that come with menstruation but never more than an increase of 10 hairs or so.

My question is ......how long does this take? When I was younger I dieted and never lost my hair! I am really worried that the little hairs I see are taking FOREVER to thicken my hair! I get a sore scalp on and off that now flakes and can get very sore especially near PMS but the two dermas I saw think it is not to be worried about.

Somehow I think this traumatized my scalp but I am told my follicles look very healthy! I have hair sticking up throughout my head but I want to say that 6 months does not seem reasonable to say hair grows back in that much time. I am now four months with normal shedding of no more than like 30 a day.

Some days I feel like I am making progress and others I feel like OMG is this ever going get back to normal? How long do you think? Seems more like it takes at least a year for these little hairs to grow to a length I can see making my hair look thicker. Oh yeah and do you know if you were always a big shedder in life do you still shed during recovery and does it interfere with regrowth?

Hello hair loss sufferer,

Interesting story you have there and it seems that all your problems started from Crash Dieting. When you go into an excessive diet mode, you will not only hurt your hair but also your general health because usually during this period, your body faces deficiencies in all sorts of vital nutrients and minerals that keep your body from operating normally. You will also jeopardize your immune system leading way to all sort of viral attacks and infections. Skipping meals are never advisable and usually it can be really dangerous too.

As a matter of fact, crash dieting is a way to really cause damage to your body and sometimes it can take months not to mention years to get your body back into balance. As your body is already hurt by the ordeal, replenishing your body with large amounts of red meat is not a way to go about it. You will need to progressively heal your body and mental state affected from the period of dieting.

I think your sudden hair loss condition is pretty obvious, it’s Telogen Effluvium caused by a sudden shock and stress triggered by your extreme dieting. Sudden shock like this will usually trigger massive hair loss within 2 to 3 months from the start of the crash diet. Since you are experiencing symptoms like this, it’s pretty safe to say it’s definitely related to your diet. I do hope that you will practice more restraint in crashing your diet in the future as it might further hurt your hair not to mention other implications to your health.

One thing that you should be at ease about is that your hair shedding rate is returning to normal which is less than 100 hairs a day. It looks like your body is normalizing and the hair is starting to grow again. As your hair can only grow around ½ inch a month, it will probably take at least 1 year to see a growth of 6 inches. I do believe that your hair is much longer than that so a little patience will help. Try not to worry too much as it will add on to the burden your body is already facing. Relax and calm down as I am sure that things will look much brighter in days to come.

Your PMS problem might cause hormonal fluctuations that can lead to additional hair loss but not everyone faces serious hair loss problems with premenopause. Since your dermatologists suggested that you should not need to worry about it, then you should heed to the advice. If you still think that you will need attention on that issue maybe your dermatologists can offer you some nutritional supplements and well as dietary plan to assists you.

You might want to try Vitamin B Complex, a good organic shampoo as well as some steps in my Preventing Hair Loss Section to help boosts your hair growth. I don’t think you will need any significant medications for your condition because it looks like it’s getting back on track. However, if you want to experience faster hair growth, a marine supplement known as Viviscal can help women with hair growth problems. Just to stress further, crash dieting can really harm you and it brings more harm than good to your body. You might be able to shed a sizable amount of weight is a short time but the complications that comes with it is definitely not worth it. Have a nice day!

Your hair should come back over time, so dont worry about it too much :)
Healthy eating and a balanced diet are essential to your recovery. It wont be the quickest process on the planet, but given time you should get back to your full head of hair.
A product that I've been using since I started suffering alopecia has helped me no end (was really starting to get paranoid about my hair loss). It's real easy to use and although I haven't noticed a massive difference, I can see hair growing back into the spots where it's been AWOL for too long.
If you visit www.want-my-hair-back-now.com they are currently doing a special offer (wasn't around when I got it, had to pay full price :(

Best of luck to you, I'm sure you will be fine given time.

Hello there young guy. I think you might be facing with Alopecia Areata where hair loss is pretty sudden accompanied by bald spots. It's a kind of auto immune disease and you should see medical attention as soon as possible.

I am just 16 eat well and get plenty of exercise. I go to a small high school where I am the class "jock", all the girls want me, I am captain of the football team, all the dudes want to be my friend. I have been told I can make a lot of money as a male model. I love clothes, love dressing up and looking good, I have think black wavy hair that looks great. Get the picture? Four months ago my hair started to fail out! Now, I wear a hat all the time because I actually have a bald spot on the back top of my head. What does this mean?

me again

may i ask anyone who has gone through this or knows of this........ can sheddign fluctuations occur ? Liek one day I get only about 10-15 hairs shed and then I go up as high as 25 out of nowhere. i know it is not over 50 or anythign and I am thankful for that but I guess I wonder....does your shedding go through cycles as it tries to normalize itself? Whenever there is an icrease it makes me nuts as I have become obsessed with low shedding. When my hair was first recovering it was really very low but I also had less hair. Then liek one tiem it goes up for a few weeks alternating but never higher than like 30 and then it goes way low again. Sometiems there is a correlation with PMS but soemtimes no. Just wondering about what anyone knows about shedding cycles in general. As I stated before...I was a HUGE shedder all my life but it never had an impact on my hair. This did of course as it was continuous for two months and came in waves of high amounts for me. I am tryign to calm down and not worry but it is easier said than done. Last four days was low like 15 or under and then today was like maybe over 20 or 25. Is shedding always a sign hair is regrowing? the ones I shed are long and in the back where there has been faster regrowth adn that is where it came out first before. Thanks in advance for any help and info you can offer! I ust want to feel like this fluctuation is now normalized shedding as my body recovers from this nightmare. my hair is above my shoulders as to not have too much weighing it down, but I still cannot bring myself to get a haircut and clip it myself. It is very curly adn so it hides the mistakes. lol Just want to know how normal shedding coems back after a shedding thing like this. I really want to get to a point that I don't even check the shed in the shower anymore. I think that is my next step to feeling more secure in recovery ,but it is hard! Losing 50 a day seems like so much for normal ammounts and I am not there and I don't want to be! lol My top and bangs don't seem to shed too much and are filling in SLOWLY!!!! They got skimpy and stuff! All I know is .....I want this over! lolAnyone care to reassure me? lol

You Will Get Your Hair Back!
by: Anonymous

Hi there,

Don't worry as I am pretty sure your hair will come back gradually. It's going to be a slow and steady process but sooner or later, if you manage your health and lifestyle properly, you will eventually get your hair back! Good luck and all the best to you!

I do eat right now and I don't excessively eat red meat! lol I just started there as I began to actually begin eating . I did not have this happen after the initial weight loss actually . It came later after months of takign the diet too far. I had done it nromally and had no issues with hair as I excersized adn ate balanced. What happened after i stopped excersizing was that I started to do the skipping of meals. I did that for months that fall and winter and then in the spring was when I had the huge shed. It took such a toll on my hair. I am eating well now and eat lots of fruit and veggies and I try to make sure I eat veggies everyday with protein at each meal. I take biotin and hair skin an nails and the b complex you spoke of. I am just amazed at how long the wait is. In the meantime my shed is normal and stays under 30 but it makes me worried that it will make it take so long for it to gain thickness. There is also cyclical shedding that women get near their periods and it can really freak with your mind especially with the hormones you have making you nutty! lol It is only an increase of 10-15 hairs but honestly it shakes your self confidence. Trying to relax is not easy i must say! I wish I had never dieted like that. ANyway.....I am thinking perhaps over a year is more liek the tiem frame as many hairs are still only aninch or 1 and a half inches all over my head! I just want reassurance. Thanks.
