Confirming the Yasmin birth control - hair loss connection.

I would like to submit myself as a "test subject," as it were. I have been experiencing serious Telogen Effluvium (temporary hair loss) from my first round of Yasmin last year. I noticed my hair falling out in huge amounts about 1 month into taking the pill, so I got off after 3 months. My hair continued to fall out for about 6 months, and then gradually stopped. There is some regrowth, but it's coming in very slowly.

Here's the important part: I RE-STARTED Yasmin because I needed to be back on the pill for contraceptive protection and thought maybe the hair loss from the last time was all in my head (no pun intended). MY HAIR LOSS PROCEEDED TO RESTART AFTER A MONTH ON THE PILL and began to fall out in heavy amounts once again. This is not placebo at all. Here is the reason I can tell the difference:

When I am on the pill, I wake up to find small white follicles that have simply plucked themselves out of my head and are sitting there, waiting to fall out. On the pill, even just touching my hair forces out two or three hairs by the very root. This did not occur after my body rid itself of the last bout of Yasmin.

I would just like to CONFIRM all the doubt that I, too, had about whether Yasmin causes hair loss while on the pill. INDEED - IT DOES.

Editor’s Comments,

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your experiment with us. It’s no new story that Yasmin has been associated with some sudden hair loss and what you did personally confirm it to all the readers that are taking this birth contraceptive. Thank you again for sharing your story and experience you have with us!

FINALLY!
by: Brenda

Throughout the course of going on and off Yaz/Yasmine I have probably lost around 50% of my hair.

I never had super think hair to begin with, but it wasn't thin either. Pretty average. I could go 1-2 days without washing, and was able to style it any way I wanted.

Fast forward to now. I have to wash it every day. In fact, I'll wash my hair in the morning, and by evening time, it looks as if I've gone a few days since my last shampoo. Its thin (in both abundance and physical size of my strands,) oily, lifeless, dry at the ends, and wide at the part. I can't do anything with it now. My self esteem has plummited because of it. As of now, I've had blood tests done to check my thiroid. Normal. I'm currently waiting on a referral to a dermatologist.

After reading this, I have strong feeling that yaz/yasmine is the evil culprit. Hair loss is not common in my family. 40s, 50s, yeah a little thinning is pretty normal. Having such horribly thin hair at the age of 27 however...is not. I'm definitely going to bring this up with my dermatologist. Thank you!

Ocella then off
by: Anonymous

oops, just posted a long post with a mistake- I know Ocella is the generic for Yasmin. I was on Yasmin for many years and then switched to ANOTHER birth control that my doc suggested- and for the life of me can't remember the name but that is what triggered the hair loss. I will ask the doc what exactly I was on. sorry for the confusion.

Ocella then off
by: Anonymous

I apologize for the novel below I am desperate for help! I've been on Yasmine birth control since I was 21 years old- I only went off Yasmine to become pregnant- I did not experience hair loss when I went off the pill, during my pregnancy or for the two months after I gave birth. I went back on the pill so soon after pregnancy because I was having some post-labor hormone issues, but had no concern about hair loss.

Back in February my doctor switched me to Ocella- she thought it might help me with low mood I was experiencing in the evening. I would say that from that first month I was on I noticed hair loss- but I couldn't believe it was the birth control.

I finally decided to go off the pill altogether in May, to see if that would improve things. It did not, I've been losing about 200 to 300 hairs a day, probably more since this is only what I am noticing in the shower. I do not have bald spots, just overall thinning. It is now August and I have been playing the waiting game, hoping my body, hormones, and hair will stabilize. I have a doc appointment on September 1st.

I have a back up supply of yasmine birth control that I keep eying longingly. Not sure if I should go back on or keep waiting but we'll see what the doctor says. I should add that my mother who is 65 is not suffering from hair loss, but my dad's sister does have some thinning (same age as my mom) Please let me know your thoughts!

Does this happen to everyone?
by: Anonymous

I stopped taking Ocella about two weeks ago and so far, most of the withdrawal symptoms I've experienced are emotional. Anxiety, panic attacks, tingling hands, etc. These don't surprise me though as I've had a history of emotional problems. I was researching my symptoms and came across all these pages of women losing their hair... I did notice some slight thinning when I was on the pill (about 1.5 years) but it wasn't enough for me to be concerned with as I noticed it mostly on the carpets/pillows/shower... my hair didn't feel any thinner. I have EXTREMELY thick, long, dark wavy hair (even hair stylists are put off by it) and I have always shed a lot.

So my question is... I'm a bit of a hypochondriac and these types of forums really freak me out. Does the extreme hair loss happen to ALL or MOST women who stop taking these pills? Or is this a less-than-common occurence? Please can anyone eaase my mind? Or tell me if there is any way to prevent it from happening?

Three Years of Hair Hell
by: Anonymous

I have good news and bad news. It's been about 3 years since I have been off Yaz. It has been the worst 3 years of my life. My hair thinned so badly, particularly at the hairline, with a horrible recession at one temple. My hair was so dry and fly away, I could not manage it at all. My guess is that I had lost about 50% of it. I was beginning to think it would never come back.

Now the good news: Just this month, I have FINALLY noticed it's filling in. It's still very dry, but it's coming in thicker, and the temple is no longer sparse. I put all my baseball caps away today. I'm not sure what's bringing it back, whether it's simply time, or that I've been taking prenatal vitamins for the last several months along with Avodart Rx for about 7 months, men's rogaine, biotin and Omega 3.

I also massage my head every night while putting in the rogaine. So, hang in there everyone. Now that I have my life back, I plan on suing Bayer. It is unconscionable that they allowed this to happen. For those of you who are still suffering, there's a type of hair extension called Interlink. I never had it done, but was about to try it.

The people who have used it have had exceptional results, and when I called to find out about it, they were very nice. It's a type of hair extension which is tied to the natural hair. Each piece opens up into several hairs. If anyone wants more info, I'm happy to provide it here.

Didn't Realise Hair Loss Connection Till Now
by: Anonymous

Thank you for this website. I lost 50% of my thick, lustrous hair (it was so thick, no headband would fit, many hairbands and hairclips simply snapped or bounced off my head - frustrating at the time but now I miss it) over a few years but never guessed that it could be due to Yasmin. I had undergone a couple of very stressful years and put my hairloss down to that.

Hair topical treatments, such as Minoxidil, resulted in very slight regrowth but nothing too significant and I am currently despairing, because there is a very clear thin area on my crown and my parting is almost bare. This coming from someone whose hairdressers used to moan about the amount of hair they had to cut and style.

Now that I have read everyone's comments, I am going to undergo a host of blood tests (even though I am terrified of needles), see a doctor and hopefully get referred to good dermatologist (does anyone know of a good dermatologist in central London?)and most importantly, STOP USING YASMIN. Could anyone tell me if stopping midway through a pill pack would affect me negatively or if I should just finish the pack? I have just over a week's worth of pills left, until the end of the cycle.

Many thanks and again, I can't express enough my gratitude for your posts.

Hi Jessie,

A scalp biopsy can tell you if you have AGA, any scarring alopecia, alopecia aerta, or any other kind of abnormality. It is good to do just to rul ethe bad things out. It is no big deal to do.

I have bene suffering from a Te for 12 months. It was aweful, but I hope that I will recover once the hair loss is stable. It will take time , I know, but in the meantime, just wait it out before jumping into anything drastic.

It is tough to deal with hair loss, especially for women. Hang in there, it will get better.

Hi Jessie,

I wouldn't recommend going back on the pill. From things I've read and what doctors have told me, sometimes taking the pill can start another bout of TE. I have read of others experiencing TE for over a year and sometimes it just takes a little longer. My abnormal shedding lasted 10-12 months and even though I've been shedding normal amounts for the last 6-7 months, I still have a long way to go. I would give your body a few more months (I know how hard it is to just ride this out) and see if it starts tapering off. Have you noticed any improvement in the shedding at all? Please hang in there.

Hi jessie,

please dont go back on the pill. its not going to solve anything. sometimes it just takes time for your body to go back to normal. going on the pill can make things worse. i know it is hard to hear, but just ride it out. have you had a scalp biopsy at all to see if something else is going on??

What to do next, pill or no pill?
by: jessie kennelly

Hi Everyone,

I have posted a few things on this website. I stopped the pill (btw it's not just Yaz that does this) in january 2010 and am still suffering hairloss. 2-3 hairs everytime I touch my head and there is little regrowth, there are bald patches when I tie my hair back.

I am thinking of going back on the pill as this will nto stop unless something changes inside my body. Has anyone gone back ON the pill to STOP the hairloss? I beleive it's totally hormonal, and the only way to stop it is trial and error with pill (althought pill caused it)

I don't think over 1 year this will stop on its own.

Very tired of thinking about hair all the time.

An update
by: Anonymous

I posted under "anon" months ago conerning my issue with Yaz and hairloss/heart palpatations. I have now been off of Yaz since January 2010. My hairloss has completely stopped, (I now have normal loss, 50-75 hairs or so a day) but my texture has never recovered. My hair is still quite brittle and dry. The thin-almost bald spot in the back never did grow completely in either. The good news is that the loss did stop and my hair has thickened. Also,my palpataions have slowed to only once every other week or so. Now I use lots of glossing products to attempt and replicate the shine my hair used to have. I may never have the same hair ever again, but it is thicker and has stopped falling out... Take care everyone. I wish you all the very best.

My hair is still thinning
by: Anonymous

Hey girls, may i just say, i am so so glad i found this page. I started taking Yasmin in december 2010, as my doctor reccomended it to me as a pill with the least side effects. HA!

I noticed my hair thinning while i was on it, but assumed it was do to a lice treatment i had to use after my son had them at school. It never clicked with me that the only thing i had changed was that i switched from Levlen ED to Yasmin. I stopped taking it after 4 months.

And still, everytime i touch my hair i have 2-3 hairs on my hand. I have dandfuff which i never had before. I don't know what to do..I've had to cut my beatiful mid back length wavy hair into a bob, and just feel like crying. I'm also still getting uncontrolable shaking and heart flutters that began when i was on it. Please help me, I don't want to lose all of my hair :(

TO LEE
by: Abby

Hi Lee,

Your story seems similar to mine. I took Yaz for only 2 months and after stopping this pill my hair began to pour off my head. The abnormal shedding lasted for almost 10 months but after the 3rd month of shedding it began to slooooowly decrease. During that time I also saw some fluctuations in shedding.

I also had so many blood tests done. I saw 2 OB/GYN, 1 Endo, 2 Derms and my primary care and they all tested me for everything that could have had an effect on my hair. Everything also came back normal. Luckily almost all of the doctors agreed that going on/off the pill could DEFINITELY cause Telogen Effluvium and most compared it post pardum hair loss. Only one of the doctors REFUSED to admit that Yaz could do such a thing. It was the OB/GYN that prescribed that pill and actually took it herself. I guess she didn't want to admit that her precious perfect little pill could do such a thing...when it's listed as a side effect on the leaflet!

How long has it been since your shed stabalized? How much do you think you lost during those 7 months? I feel like I've lost 35-40% of my hair. Even though I started out with thick hair, it feels so thin. I do have a lot of re growth, but I know it's going to be a long time till it's back to normal. Was there an area that was hit the hardest?

TO COURTNEY
by: Abby

Hello Courtney,

I'm so sorry to hear that you have been experiencing the awful side effect of this evil pill. I went through a massive shed that went on for 10 months AFTER stopping Yaz. I guess some girls experience the a gradual shed while on the pill and others eperience a massive shed when discontinuing the pill or switching pills.

Some even experience BOTH!!!! Unfortunately, once Telogen Effluvium has set in, there's nothing you can do but let it run it's course. The hairs you're seeing shed now, are hairs that went into the telogen phase prematurely 2-3 months ago.

When I was still shedding large amounts of hair, an Endo recommended going back on the pill or switching to another. But then she decided not to because starting another pill or switching could cause another bout of TE. Sometimes switching pills will help by balancing your hormones, but if those hairs were pushed into the telogen phase a few months back, they're going to fall no matter what. I know just how hard it is to see hairs pouring off of your head and feeling like it's never going to stop, but it does.

I have seen 2 different derm and one was a waste of time and money and the other one was great. So it's kinda a hit and miss.

Since you have taken blood tests and everything comes back normal, it seems that you're experiencing TE. Most sites will say that TE lasts between 3-6 months, but form what I've read (on forums) it seems to last more like 6-12 months.

I was on yaz for 3 months a few years back. When I got off, I think about a month later, my hair started to fall out in clumps. I was losing hair for roughly 10 months and then it stabilized. My part widened and although I always saw growth...my hair never regained its volume. I am now 4 years post stopping the pill, and my hair is still thin and part still wide. Pleae help...was offerd rogaine by derm but am afraid to take that as I read it is for life. How do I bring back my lost hair? do I go back on the pill? I really don't want too given it caused me to lose my hair. I am so scared my hair will never grow back. Any suggestions???

Hair loss due to Yasmin
by: Lee

I have the same story: I always had beautiful hair, not that thick but lots of it. After taking Yasmin for 3 months my hair started falling out in handfuls.

I straight away went of it, and experienced such bad hair loss I wanted to cry. I went to see my GP- who was convinced it couldn't be Yasmin- and ran a whole batch of blood tests. The tests came back normal- proving to me it was Yasmin!

I lost alot of hair for about 7 months, and finally I am pleased and relieved to say it has slowed down considerably, and I can see new baby hairs coming.I must admit I have been taking Nourkin hair regrowth vitamins, and am thrilled that I am no longer loosing copious amounts of hair.

Thank you so much for this website, as it was actually the only confirmation I got that Yasmin does this.

Dear All,

I have written a few posts on this wall but would like to add a few more.

For the past 13 months I have had severe hair shedding and at times thought I was going to have no hair left on my head. I have been super paranoid and been keeping my hair after I shower to see the different quantities I loose each time.

However, the shedding does seem to have slowed. I will never have the same amount of hair as I had before, but atleast it is starting to stabilise.

Anyone who wants to contact me can on jigsawjessie@hotmail.co.uk

I wish you all luck and stay off the pill if you think it causes your hair loss. I will never take it again.

Good luck all and don't let the hair get you upset.

3 Years Since Yaz
by: Jill

My hair started falling out on Yaz, and when I realized Yaz was the cause, stopped taking it immediately. (Had been on it for just under a year.) My hair has continued to thin over the 3 year period following Yaz and has taken on the consistency of cotton.

Each hair is fiber thin. It's a challenge to comb out, because the hairs are so thin they get easily knotted. No matter how much product I use, it still looks bad. Color does not take to it well, and looks drab and lifeless. Even when it's soaking wet, it looks dry. I used to have really great carefree hair. Now I fuss with it for hours, and sometimes don't leave the house. I lost confidence and feel depressed. I've tried every supplement, nothing has worked.

I had taken Yaz for about three years with little to no hair thinning or other bothersome side effects. I came off just under a year ago and started noticing my hair thinning around the hairline within a couple months.

I had blood tests done and finally decided it was stress, since the reason for coming off was due to the death of my fiance. The thinning has not stopped and is now affecting how I style my hair and is spreading over my whole head. Before my hair was so thick every stylist I went to complmented me. I did not even link this to bc until a few days ago while researching hair loss.

My hair was my feature I was proudest of, now I dread looking at it every morning. I am considering on of the class action suits that are out there.

Yaz nearly killed me
by: Anonymous

Ladies I am so glad I have found this page. I started YAZ in June of 2008. At the time I had gorgeous, thick (yet fine) extremely healthy waist long hair. I began to notice the hair loss sometime in December of '08.

Also a textural change began as well. My hair was no longer glossy and smooth. Instead it was dull and brittle. Beginning around July 2009 I started having heart palpatations. One was so severe that my soon to be mother in law nearly called 911.

I came extremely close to passing out. I didn't even think to do the research on YAZ to see if it could be the culprit of both problems...Back to my hair issue. I started having to cut my hair every single month. I also noticed a patch on the back of my head that was actually becoming bald!

I finally searched the web and uncovered the truth. Not only was YAZ killing my hair but it was killing me. I stopped using it sometime January of 2010. The palpatations have all but stopped but the hair is still recovering. I wish I had never come in contact with such a vile, life threatening substance.

I am now on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo. I am having minimal hair loss--in fact it seems pretty normal. The texture of my hair, however has never recovered.

Yasmin and Yaz destroyed my life!
by: Nikki

I started taking Yasmin for a few months back in 2006 and got off of the pill and then in 2008 began taking Yaz and was off of that pill in a couple months. I'm devestated to say at 18 years old I went from having thick enough hair for 2 people to thin, oily, limp, and brittle ugly hair over the course of 5 years.

I am now 23 and it is continuing to fall out and I have baldness in the front and top of my head. I never was on any other medication and have run blood tests that say my levels are normal and no thyroid issues whatsoever.

I am now forced to dress the remainder of my hair in a combover and find myself obsessing about other women's hair I see on a daily basis. I am now on the verge of shaving my head and buying a wig just to feel like I have a real head of hair again. I am so angry that my doctor claimed the pills had no connection to hair loss, but they were misinformed on my account.

This whole situation is horrible and I wish there was a way to get my thick beautiful hair back again. This is my story and I share the pain with all of you out there with the same problem.

I would love to make women more aware of this issue as I am sure we are not the only people who have had these problems.

Yasmin ruined my self esteem
by: Jen P

I stopped taking Yasmin February of 2008 after taking it for about 3 years. I decided to get off of it because of the horrendous migranes, mood swings, low libido and God knows. Shortly after I started to notice how I was starting to notice my scalp around my temple area.

To make a long story short we're now in January of 2011 and I'm still noticing hairloss. Personally I don't think I 'll ever have the same volume or texture of hair I had before. I lost 50% of my hair. Now its oily at the scalp, dry at the ends, brittle and lifeless. All of this because of Yasmin. If I only had known. Doctor's, Gyno's should know these things and warns us for the side effects. If it wasn't for the internet all of us women would be in the dark not knowing what was causing this to our own bodies. If anyone decides to actually do something about this, let me know because I think it should be taken off the market.

I've had chronic hair loss since Yaz. What I'm doing now is very expensive, but it's working. I am taking Avodart, using men's Rogaine foam, and going for low level laser treatments. The laser machine looks like a hood hair dryer from the 50's you see in the salons. The treatment is about $3000 for a year, but my hair has stopped falling out and has started to look thicker and healthier. It's beginning to get a bit of bounce back. If anyone is interested in specifics, let me know and I'll send a link to info.

Hi Jessie,

I'm so sorry to hear that your shedding hasn't stopped. Mine shed for 9-10 months before going back to normal. During that time my shed would fluctuate a lot until it just stayed between 40-70 hairs per day.

Even though I saw tons of doctors and 2 Derms, I wasn't given any medication. All of them told me it was TE and I would just have to wait and ride it out. An Endo that I saw recommended going back on the pill, but wasn't sure it would help. She said once TE is triggered, the pill might help or it might make it worse. I wasn't willing to take the chance of it starting another bout of TE so I decided to stay off the pill. I also didn't want to deal with going through this all over again once I decided to stop.

Have you noticed any decrease in your shedding?

Dear Abby
by: Jessie

Hi Abby thanks for your comment,

I have been loosing hair since February 2010 and stopped the pill in March 2010, as I thought this was the reason my hair loss suddenly increased dramaticaly.

There hair loss is not stopping and you can now see my scalp at the back of my head.

I don't know what to do and cant not afford the expensive medicine from the doctor. Has anybody tried to go back on the pill to stop the hair loss?

yasmin - research before taking it!
by: nancy

I had been on yasmin/ocella for 5 years before I realized the ridiculous hair loss had to be due to the pill. It was the only new drug that I had been taking when the loss started, but when I finally sought treatment after my hairdress told me to have my hormones checked I was told by my gyn and dermatologist that it could not be the pill.

All of the bloodtests came back normal, so I went on vitamin therapy and rogaine. Months later I was still losing and seeing more scalp and my husband said it had to be one of the medications I was on. I agreed that my mind kept coming back to the bc and then I googled hair loss and yasmin/ocella. When I found women complaining of hair loss after taking yasmin/yaz/ocella who were in their 20's I knew it had to be the pill.

It is a realatively new pill that came out in 2001 with a different synthetic hormone. I also found that they prescribe yasmin to woman that have male pattern body hair and it works well for them. That explains why I have no underarm hair anymore. Been off it 1 1/2 months now, hoping to have some regrowth.

I am really mad at myself that I did not research prior to going on the medication. I used to have a thick head of hair and I've lost more than 1/2. Greatful that I had thick hair in the first place!

I want to scream - Yaz did this to me
by: Anonymous

I went on Yaz in 2008 and was on it for 8 months. At month 6, my skin had completely dried out, my nails were cracking down the middle, but it wasn't till month 8 that my hair started falling out in ropes.

I freaked out, did some research on line, and realized it was probably this BC pill. I had been on other BC pills before and never had this problem, so I never made the connection. My ob/gyn said they weren't aware of any issues with Yaz and hair loss. And there I was, beginning to bald. I hate to say this, but here I am, more than 2 years off Yaz, and my hair has never grown back.

I always had gorgeous hair. I notice when I hot roller it now, it takes 1/2 the amount of rollers, so I've lost half of it. It's dry, thin, and I have a really thin spot at my temple. This has been the most devastating thing that has happened to me in my life.

It has ruined the last 2 years. I've tried everything, vitamins, Avodart, Rogaine, visits to Dr. in NY, head massage, you name it. Not to mention all the money it's cost, as well as emotional toll. Nothing works. I am so mad at Bayer - they never said anything about hair loss in their commercials, just happy beautiful women dancing around WITH LOTS OF HAIR. This is an outrage, and we should all do something about it.

Update
by: Abby

I posted on June 21st that I had been losing hair for 9 months after stopping Yaz. I was only on Yaz for 2 months and prior to going on Yaz I had been pill free for 2 years with gorgeous, long thick hair. It's been 13 months since I've been off this pill and 11 months since the hair loss first began and FINALLY the shedding has stabalized. I'm now shedding 40-60 hairs a day which I consider to be completely normal. Even though the shedding has stabalized, my hair is still EXTREMELY thin. I think at this point, I've lost about 50% of my hair. I do see some re growth all over my head, but not enough to fill in the thin spots. I've seen 2 dermatologists that diagnosed me with Telogen Effluvium. Both said that I have to be patient for re growth. I know that it took 10 months to get like this so it's not going to re grow over night. I know that it's just hair, but it has been the worse year of my life. Anyone that is going through this, just hang in there.

If you have any questions, post them on here. I'll make sure to come back on here and check.

I am very sorry to hear that your hair has been falling out for so long, i feel that I have the same problem and the hair loss is never going to stop.

Have you had any blood tests to see if you have fluctuating hormons?

Good luck with the rest of your life and I hope your hair loss is not effecting it

Yasmin 1 month - Hair loss 1 year 9 month
by: Anonymous

I started taking Yasmin in December 2008, I took it for a month before I started to notice my hair loss. I stopped using Yasmin but my hair loss has continued at a steady rate since then (it is now 2010). I am using Homeopathy and Indian Head Massage to treat my hair loss and although I havent stopped my hair loss, I have been able to remain relively calm about this horrible problem! It's so hard though!

Hair Loss and the Pill
by: Jessie

In Sept 2009 I started to notice my hair loss and decided to stop the pill. My hair loss (300 hairs per day) stopped 4 months later.

I then STUPIDLY went back on the pill and noticed that my hairloss was starting again. It has not stopped now for over 6 months and I fear I am suffereing from Chronic TE!!

I am so scared that the hair loss will not stop! I quite the pill 6 months ago.

How long have other people been experience hair loss?

Yasmin & hair loss
by: Lib

Relieved to find others in the same situation. I used to take Yasmin a few years ago without any apparent side effects. Then I had kids, got a few years older, and I went back on it again in late 2009. I first noticed the excessive hair loss in Feb 2010. I was losing heaps when I washed my hair and at the peak I was losing about 160 hairs with each wash. GP sent me for blood tests which all came back normal. I knew my hair volume was decreasing as I now had to use three turns of the hair band to hold it as opposed to two. Decided to take myself off the pill completely in Aug 2010 and hoping the hair loss will stop sooner rather than later.

Confirming Yasmin generic - Ocella - hair loss connection
by: Anonymous

Thanks to all of you for placing your comments on this site. As you all have mentioned all the doctors (ob/gyn, derma, internist, etc) refuse to admit that the pill is in any way related to my hair loss. This is extremely frustrating because if they would admit it then maybe it can be addressed and someone can come up with a solution to this problem. My situation is that I began Ocella 6.5 months ago . I didn't notice my hair loss until 4 months on the pill because I just thought it was normal shedding. But over the past 2 months my hair has been falling out in huge amounts not only when I wash it but all day . I do not even need to touch it just lean on pillow or sit on a chair to anywhere. It is horrible and frightening. I STOPPED Ocella 3 weeks ago and my hair loss is still as huge - no change , it even seems worse. Most seem to indicate it is related to Menopause- but my blood work indicates that I am not menopausal and I still have regular periods. It was also stated to me that this could be a condition that Mediterranean women suffer. My hair was very long and thick and full of body ..it is thinning and very dry. My eyes are also very dry. Thanks from M

yasmin for endo and hair loss
by: Isabella

I would also like to add my story, after being on cilest for two years and microgynon for 9 months i was put on yasmin to control my endometriosis.

i could only stand this pill for three months, not only did my endo pain intensify and my mood swings uncontrollable, i began loosing my hair in vast amounts which did not happen with my other pills. i've always had very thick wavy hair, i have been off the pill altogether for three months and my hair is now very fine and straighter and still shedding at an alarming rate.

My nurse was unwilling to believe yasmin did this so gave me a blood test for thyroid problems, and after this came back clear she concluded it was indeed yasmin that was making my hair fall out. the only advice they could give me was wait it out and the hair loss would eventually stop. My advice is steer clear of this pill completely.

Hair Loss AFTER STOPPING YAZ
by: Abby

I've been off Yaz for 9 months and shedding TONS of hair for 7 months. In the beginning I was losing over 400 hairs just after a shower. Now it's decreased to 40-80 after a shower and I have lost about 40% of my hair. I was only on Yaz for 2 months and prior to going on Yaz I had a full, thick head of hair. All I want more than anything is for this shedding to stop. I have noticed a lot of new growth, but some of these hairs have fallen out. Some have grown into 1-3 inch hairs. Please be careful when messing with hormones.

Hair loss with Yasmin...
by: gem

I had the exact same thing...I had been using yasmin for about a year - within a few months I noticed quite alot of hair loss - especially whilst washing it in the shower, it got to a point that people around me started to notice that it had become thinner and I knew as soon as I could no longer french plait it something was wrong. My hair was pretty long and in the end I had to have quite alot cut off it to try and make it appear thicker.

It has taken 3 years (since quiting yasmin) for my hair to feel thicker, although I can't seem to grow it to the length is used to be without it stil looking thin+limp :( It's a tricky one because two of my friends are on yasmin and they haven't had any problems with hair loss. I also found I suffered with dry eyes. It didn't really help that whenever I mentioned these concerns about hairloss to my doctor they always seemed to shrug it off. I know yasmin is still fairly new but I really think that the link with hair loss needs to be properly established so that us women can make a more informed choice as to what birth control we choose to take.

Yaz and hair loss
by: Anonymous

I have been on YAZ for just 3 weeks and have noticed excessive shedding. The hair at the top of my head is very thin and I have a small bald spot. I have long thick hair so its not that noticeable ,I hope not anyway. I wouldnt have even known it was YAZ but I just happen to be talking to a friend who mentioned her hair fell out when she was on YAZ for a year(She now wears extensions). So as soon as I heard that I wondered if it could be the YAZ but I still took it for another week because I wasnt sure. Im no longer taking it and i starting taking garlic pills to hopefully decrease the shedding.

It never grows back to what it was
by: Anonymous

I used Yaz in 09 for three months, and realized that my hair has gotten much thinner one month after stopping the pill. I freaked out! None of the females in my family from all sides has experienced thinning hair even at old age.
I went to few dermatologists, endocrinologists, regular doctors and nobody ever admitted or even thought that birth control can cause hair loss.
On the contrary they thought it would help hair growth. After all the possible tests there was no conclusion or diagnosis, I was healthy. That only points to YAZ. I have to tell you that I've taken all the steps(organic shampoo, no hair color, no conditioner, special herbal hair treatments for growth, healthy eating, extra vitamins for hair...) in trying to get my hair back to normal thickness but unfortunately even after three years it has not fully recovered. I's gotten a little bit better, but far from what it was. It is sad, and I regret ever taking this poison, but I am glad that it didn't affect me more severely. Good luck everyone.

Yaz and hair loss
by: Anonymous

Wow, I really didn't want to believe that Yaz was actually the culprit for my hair loss but considering I had really thick hair exactly 4months ago, before I started taking it... I have no other choice to believe now, especially since I'm not taking any other medications. Today I decided I'm done with it and I'm hoping and praying that my hair will return to normal and stop this excessive shedding in the next few months. I literally lose at least 10 or more strands of hair just from touching it. If I decide to brush it.......tears come to my eyes because of the amount of hair that comes out, all with little white dots at the root which I would guess is the follicle(i hope not though).
This cant be an acceptable side effect for ANYTHING other than chemotherapy!!!!!

I am so relieved to hear that I'm not the only one!! I started taking Yaz about 3 months ago because a friend of mine had about 6 months of packs that she wasn't going to use. Things were going just swimmingly until Monday when i noticed a quarter sized patch of my hair MISSING on the top side of my head!! I don't know when it came out but it seems to have happened pretty much over night. I'm 23 with a comb over! IT'S AWFUL! i didn't even think that Yaz could be the culprit...definitely is and i'm stopping the pill immediately! Man i hope it fills back in quick, this shit is nuts.

hair loss - DEFINITELY!!!!!

So I have been on yasmin for the past 2 years. I have always had pretty full hair & haven't cut my hair (except for a small trim) in 3 years. I noticed that my hair had gotten significantly thinner over the past two years. Now that I've read these blogs, I know why. I am getting off of this pill ASAP!!!!

Hair-Loss
by: Anonymous

I have been on Yasmin for 7 years and after about 2 years of taking it I started experiencing terrible hair-loss. I went for every test possible to try and figure out why my hair was thinning out so much (I used to have extremely thick hair) and no one could figure out why because I was healthy. I started taking it when I was 18 y/o for medical problems so I didn't want to go off it but I stopped taking it 2 weeks ago after I heard this and amd hoping my hair-loss will stop soon!

Hair loss and Gums receding
by: Anonymous

I've been on Yasmin for 6 years, and just suffered through the hair loss, because regular progestone birth control pills drive me nutty.
Now I am experiencing RECEDING GUMS also. I knew the hair loss was the price you pay for Yasmin. I used tricks to thicken up the rest of my hair, and reduced the amount of shampooing. But it has gotten worse, with bigger clumps coming out after shampooing. And now the receding gums!
I am going off it tomorrow. So sad. I loved the synthetic progesterone because it made PMS less life-threatening for my husband.

Here Here to Yaz Hair Loss Connection
by: bjanderson

I took Yaz for about 4 months and noticed hair coming out of my head everytime I washed my hair and also my leg and arm pit hair got very thin. I've been off of it for 3 months and my leg and arm pit hair has returned to normal. The hair on my head is slowly filling in with new growth, but I continue to lose more than normal hair everytime I wash my hair.

Yaz
by: Lacey Sue

I have been on YAZ for 1.5 years, I had no problems with hair loss, until the last few months. I have lost enormous amounts of hair..I finally bit the bullet and took myself off of the pill, figuring that it was culprit. I have been off for 2 weeks now...no slowing yet on the shedding, but I am crossing my fingers that an end (a happy end at that) is in sight!

Yasmin and Hair Loss
by: Stephanie

Hey, I was relieved to learn there is a cause for my hair loss and that it could eventually stop falling out. I took Yasmin for 3 years, and over that period of time I noticed my hair was gradually thinning. Then, a couple of months ago it started falling out in huge amounts. I had a hunch it was from the Pill so I stopped taking it. Two months later my hair is still falling out and I have a bald spot on top. I am devastated because I have always had beautiful thick hair. I feel like it is ruined. At least I am hopeful now that my hair nightmare will eventually come to an end!

Thanks for posting, as I have had a similar experience... my hair started falling out, one month into taking Yasmin. I stopped taking it after 3months and still my hair (4 months later) continues to shed excessively.

You post gives me some hope that this nightmare will end soon, as my doctor and derm both believe that Yasmin DOES NOT CAUSE HAIR LOSS!!!
