A Year Dealing with Hair Loss

by Stacy S
(Anderson)

I am 36 years old and I have been losing a significant amount of hair for a year now. I went through a divorce last fall and went through a lot of stress because of that and my ex still stresses me out.

I started noticing my hair falling out in clumps last September and it just keeps doing that every time I take a shower. I went to a dermatologist in January of this year and she had some blood tests ran. She said my ferritin level was really low and to start taking iron pills and that should help. I have been doing that. I take one pill a day, but that has not helped at all. I read on the internet that your ferritin level has to be at 70 before new hair starts growing back. I don't know what my level is right now.

I saw another dermatologist a couple months ago and he said my hair loss seems to be from stress and that my hair should start groing back soon. My family doctor also said the same thing. My family doctor put me on anxiety pills (busiprone) a few months ago and that seemed to help with the stress a little but I still get stressed over my hair and cry. I have lost so much hair and have a lot of thin spots all over my head where you can see my scalp. There has been no new hair growing back in those spots.

I cover it up with toppik, which isn't cheap. It's $24 for a tiny can of it, but if wasn't for that stuff, I would be so much more depressed. I've always had a thick head of hair and thank god for that or I would really be bumming with the hair loss I've had. The second dermatologist I went to said I could take rogain or a generic form of rogain and that I could quit taking it once my hair started growing back.

I asked him if I quit taking it would my new hair growing in fall out and he said no. I've read that it will on the internet though. I just hope my hair starts growing back soon so I can live a happy life again and not have to worry about my hair loss every day. Should I try taking a vitamin b complex even though I have been taking iron and a multivitamin every day?

Editor’s Comments,

The only way to fight stress related hair loss is to fight stress itself because that is the root to your hair problems! Stress can cause many conditions to your body including imbalances, high blood pressure and psychological issues that all can contribute to hair loss.

Vitamin B complex can definitely help but you have to look beyond that. There are a lot of things that you can do to help alleviate stress. Diets, socializing, exercises and a vacation can help.

Give some time for your hair to recover. Losing hair can be a sudden event but growing back will take months. Be patient and your hair will slowly recover after your body stabilized.
