A week in which the world comes crashing down(Not just my Hair).

by Ryan
(Newcastle)

Hi all,

My name is Ryan and in a week in which we have seen Japan shocked by terrible Earthquakes and a Tsunami, I am losing my hair. It seems small in comparison, and as my family has told me, I shouldn't worry about it, things could be much worse. Despite this, I am dying inside a little each day, consumed by sickness, tears, and an inability to sleep due to sudden excessive hair loss.

I am 23 years of age and I’ve always had an issue with my looks, cursed with a small head and ears that stick out a little too much, but I’ve also had a full head of hair that was able to contain both of those. Sadly in the last week or so, my usual shedding of 20-30 hairs daily in the shower and bath, has given way to hundreds of hairs, visible thinning and a few bald spots where my hair has gone completely.

I am still trying to find what may have triggered this, and praying to god that today's blood test from the doctors comes back with a problem so I know this is for a reason, not just pattern baldness which I am told (Neither dad, granddad or brother have MPB).

The possible reasons I have put up for scrutiny are these:

Change in Diet, high calorie (but healthy) bodybuilding diet, with supplements such as cod liver oil, BCAA's and whey protein.

The use of Head and Shoulders anti dandruff shampoo for the last few months (Having read some similar stories).

A recent Back injury

A serious bout of Flu 3 months previous at Christmas.

Use of Microwave twice a day for the last month or so.

I'm obviously picking at straws on a few of these but these are the only changes I have made over the last year or so.

The hair loss at present is continuing rapidly, and I am praying to god that this is TE, which I can come out of, and not a predestined genetic Balding.

If anyone has any advice or can see a problem with any of the changes I have made over the last year, please let me know, it will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, this site is invaluable.

Sounds like the flu
by: Anonymous

Hey Ryan,

From the string of events you described it looks like the most realistic trigger could be the flu you had 3 months before shed. They say that it takes about three months before the shedding begins after shock to the system. Let me know any updates or questions.
