Trichorrhexis Nodosa Does
Not Cause Hair Loss. But..

What is Trichorrhexis Nodosa?

Trichorrhexis Nodosa is a disease which causes the thickening and weakening of your hair nodes and as a result your hair breaks off easily. This disease does not cause hair loss at the follicle stage but the breaking of hair shafts create an impression of hair loss.

I have decided to include this non hair loss related disease because a lot of people do not know what type of hair loss they are facing and might mistaken this condition for another hair loss problem thus wasting money on unnecessary products.

Trichorrhexis Nodosa

What causes it?

One of the main causes of this disease can be related to your genes. Your genes might play an important role whether you have inherited this disease.

Negative environmental factors such as

  • blow-drying
  • over-brushing
  • perming
  • excessive chemical use

can trigger this condition.

Thyroid problems such as Hypothyrodism where hormonal imbalances can damage your hair can also lead to this condition.

Sign and Symptoms

Your hair might appear patchy or not growing at all. This condition usually refers to 2 main types of people.

Among people of African origin, the hair may appear not to grow but microscopic examination shows that the hair shafts have nodes or swellings near the scalp which fracture easily. The hair actually grows but is broken before it can become long.

Among whites the defect often appears at the ends of the hair shaft with splitting of the ends, thinning and whitish discoloration.

Advisable Personal Care

Although Trichorrhexis Nodosa can cause psychological problems such as self confidence, medical treatment are often no necessary at first. Focus on

  • gentle brushing
  • avoid hair colorings
  • avoid frequent perming
  • avoid ironing of hair
  • use herbal hair conditioners

As this is not a hair loss condition, there is no need to use hair loss medications as it will not benefit this condition. Severe cases of Trichorrhexis Nodosa can create the appearance of hair loss so it's advisable to take care of your hair properly. It's your crowning glory!

Self Treatment Recommendations

You might want to try some of the hair products to protect your hair from this condition. You can try

  • Protein and Glycerine Leave In Conditioner
  • Jojoba with Almond Oil Heavy Conditioner
  • Shampoo with Aloe Vera for Dry Hair
  • Soy extract shampoos

These products have beneficial effects on your hair. It repairs your hair shaft and gives your hair a better shine and feel.

Something to Know

Do take note however if after adjusting your hair maintenance and your situation does not improve, it might be a thyroid hair loss condition. Most people usually neglect this condition because the symptoms are too common.
