Are You Suitable
for Hair Transplant?

Not everyone is suitable for hair transplant. Of course, most of the hair transplant clinics will usually accept all cases and all people. Good and patient focused ones will usually discuss and understand your condition first before letting you know whether you are a suitable candidate.

Suitable for hair tranplant

But the final decision lies with you. You have to ask yourself what you want out from it. If you are in the later stages of hair loss, and you want full recovery then it's quite hard to achieve.

Understand Your Needs and Requirements

Before you make your final resolve, always start by evaluating your situation by asking yourself some of these few questions

  • How much hair do you want to cover?
If you are in the early to moderate stages, then you are suitable for hair transplant as in most cases you can cover back the balding area sufficiently. However, if you are in the later stages, no matter how good a hair transplant is, you might not be able to fulfill total coverage. If you are willing to accept that fact then do proceed.
  • Have you taken other medical treatments like Propecia and Rogaine?
If both of these medications are not effective for you or does not help at all and you are a not wig guy then hair transplant is your best solution. If you just started taking these meds, allow some time to see whether it is working for you.
  • Do you have any good hair transplant surgeons in your area?
Not every surgeon can do a good job. Some are not experienced with the latest Follicular Unit Transplantation techniques and might recommend other less effective and older methods. If you can't find a good surgeon in your area, make sure you are prepared to travel or else you might end up worse than before.
  • Do you have the funds ready?
A good hair transplant is essential for the best optimum results. However, good surgeons are often expensive based on their skills and popularity. A typical hair transplant might costs from at least USD 4,000 to more than USD 10,000 for the transplant procedure and that does not include maintenance care and other costs and expenses.

It's All About the Supply

An effective hair transplant requires you to have enough donor dominance hairs that are located at the sides and back of your scalp. As these hairs are genetically resistant to DHT, they are the only suitable areas for transplanting. If you do not have enough donor hairs to cover your balding area, then you might not be able to restore back most of your hair that you lost.

Check whether your hair at the sides and back of your head are thick and full enough to cover the balding areas. If you are not sure, take a mirror to visualize the density of the sides and lower back areas. If your hair look sparse and thin in those areas, it might indicate that you are not suitable for hair tranplant.

However, it's best to get a proper consultation from a hair transplant surgeon. Most clinics offer free consultation and advice whether you are suitable for hair transplant. But at the end of the day, it's better to trust your own instincts.

Estimating the Amount of Grafts Needed

Now based on the Norwood Scale, take a look at a rough indication of your condition and we will see how many hair grafts you should need to cover your balding area.
Hair Grafts Needed : approximately 1000 - 1500
At this early stage, 1 session will usually cover back your hair however do bear in mind that you might have to come back for more sessions later when your non DHT resistant hair falls.
Hair Grafts Needed : approximately 1500 - 2000
Still quite early part of hair loss, starting now will keep the costs low and buy you time till your non resistant hair falls.
Hair Grafts Needed : approximately 2000 - 3000
You might require up to 2 sessions to completely cover back both areas of hair loss.
Hair Grafts Needed : approximately 3500-4000
At this stage, you will usually have to go through a few sessions of FUT before you are able to cover the entire hair line and the crown area. If you have a good supply of donor hair, hair transplant is the best option at this stage.
Hair Grafts Needed : approximately 5500 - 7500
With luck and sufficient donor hair, you will be able to cover back most areas of your hair. Since you have lost most of your hair, you won't need to come back to another session.
Hair Grafts Needed : approximately 6000 - 9000
When you reached this stage, it is almost impossible for you to find that much donor hair to cover back the entire scalp. What you can expect is that to cover only certain parts like your hair line while leaving the crown bald or don't even bother at all.

The Final Piece of Advice

You must face reality on how much hair you have left to actually improve your overall appearance. If you have moderate hair loss and medicines don't work, hair transplant is probably the best option for you if you can afford it.

If you are in the final stages of Pattern Baldness, your chances of recovering your overall hair fullness and density are pretty slim so I suggest you to skip it unless you can accept average improvements. You can also wait a little for the success of Hair Cloning techniques where scientists can clone unlimited donor hairs for you.
