Maintaining Your Shaved Head

Alright, you have finally shaven your head bald so how do you maintain your newly shaved head? Do you have to trim your head every day just to look good?

Shaved Head

Well, it really depends on yourself and your hair characteristics like how fast your hair grows and your personal requirements. Sometimes you might not even need to trim it in a week without it looking obvious. We will discuss some possible options for you depending on your situation.

The YOU Factor

How nice do you want your shaved head to look? Some people can accept that their hair to grow back up a little and if you don't mind that your hair stubbles up after a week or two, then there is no reason for you to shave it too regularly.

However, if you have Pattern Baldness where you are bald on the top, then a little growth can make it pretty obvious so you might want to shave it regularly. In most cases, it's generally recommended that you shave at least once a week to keep it neat and tidy.

The Hair Factor

The other factor that will directly affect your appearance is your hair and facial characteristics. Some of factors that can affect your overall looks are
Head Shaved
  • Much darker colored hair compare to your skin
If your skin and your hair have a huge color contrast, it will make your hair more obvious even after a few days. If you have fair colored skin and blonde hair, it's less obvious.
  • Faster hair growth
On average a person's hair will grow no more than half an inch a month. However, everyone is a different, some might grow a little faster or slower depending on several factors. The faster your hair grows the more frequently you will need to shave it. See more on Hair Growth Cycle.
  • Curly hair
Curly hair can be quite messy when it first grows back so it's recommended to shave it more frequently or remove it to prevent razor bumps.
  • Thick hair
If you have thick hair and also bald on top, then it's best to trim it off regularly because it will be really obvious after a week.

Although it's really up to you on the frequency you shave, most people shave 1 to 2 times a week and it's the one way to keep your bald look neat and tidy. Just remember to follow some precautions when shaving. If you shave too regularly and sloppily, the chances of your getting razor bumps increases.

Protecting Your Scalp

Your scalp is a part of your skin, but just a lot of times more sensitive. Why? If you are shaving your head for the first time, then it's the first time your scalp will have to face with pollutants and UV rays that your hair used to block off. It will also dry and burn faster compare to your face because your scalp is not used to our harsh environments. So the best way is to

  • Moisturize It
Use a moisturizer daily that can help protect your shaved head from dryness. There is no specific moisturizer but get one that does not contain alcohol. You can use the same moisturizer that you use for your face.
  • Block It
One of the most harmful elements to your scalp is UV rays exposure, which can damage your delicate scalp. Considering the fact that your scalp will be the most exposed part to UV rays, getting a good sunscreen is essential.

Good Sun BlocksThere are a lot of skin care products on the market that can provide adequate care for your shaved head. Some products like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sun Block is one of the most highly rated sun block for been easy on the skin and doesn't leave any residue. You should consider the SPF 30, 45 or 50 instead of 70 which uses a thicker formula.

Another good brand reviewed under ConsumerResearch.com is the MD Skincare Powerful Sun Protection SPF 30 which is an excellent and water resistant sunscreen that contains a lot of moisturizing ingredients like green tea, lycopene and vitamins A,C,E (ACE!!). It's also mentioned as the 'Cadillac of Sunscreens' by Health Magazine due to its power packed yet lightweight ingredients.
