What makes it work?

The main active ingredient behind Nizoral Hair Loss Shampoo is Ketoconazole. This ingredient's primary usage is for treatment of fungal infections like

  • Ringworms
  • Athletes' foot
  • Eumycetoma.

It is also used orally for treating prostate cancer because it has proven to be able the reduce Testosterone. DHT is formed when the hormone Testosterone binds with the enzyme 5 Alpha Reductase (5AR).

In Nizoral, Ketoconazole comes in a 1% and 2% formula. Its main usage is to treat acute dandruff problems and flaking. This ingredient also acts as an anti-steroid hormone synthesis such as DHT in the scalp.

Research demonstrates that Nizoral 1% is comparable to Rogaine 2% and it can increase hair growth as well as hair density. However, more research and studies are needed to understand clearly how the mechanism works.

So whats the Side Effects?

In a study, it has been found that Ketoconazole can initially increase hair loss. This might be due to the scalp's reaction to the active ingredient but it only occurs to 1% of the test subjects. Allergies or rejection of the medication can cause

  • Abnormal hair texture
  • Mild dryness of the skin
  • Itching

If you are facing any medical symptoms like the above, stop taking it immediately. You might not be suitable for this treatment.

Ketoconazole itself is a class C Pregnancy medication. It simply means that there are risks for women using this product. Oral consumption of this product is a definite no for women but there has no indication of problems when using the shampoo version.
