The next step before shaving is to get you a good head shaver and some other necessities for a perfect shave. Although, you can still use your regular shaver, you might want to invest in another one for regular head shaving.
Let's not forget about stuff like shaving cream and lotions, they are really important for protecting your scalp from razor burns and the environment. If you are new to this, let's just double check the item list.
Electric Shavers vs. Razors
When I am shaving my beard or moustache, I usually prefer an electric shaver because it does a great job for a fast daily shave. When it comes to getting a close to perfect shave, I will prefer nothing less than a good razor because they reach deeper and they follow closely to the contour of the skin.
If you are not used to razors, you must be very careful especially shaving your head for the first time unless you want to have cuts and burning sensations all over. What I suggest that you might want to use a regular electric shaver first before graduating to a razor. Always be careful because cuts will be really obvious with a shaved head. (unless you love a battle scar)
Get An Appropriate Head Shaver
Shaving your head is really different than your face. The scalp is usually more sensitive because it hasn't been shaved before. So what I suggest if you are using a razor, try getting a new one instead because they are sharper and easier to shave, especially if this is your first time.
There are many brands available, in any case, a higher range type like Gillette cartridge razors should do a pretty fine job. One of the more popular brands that users recommend is the Gillette Fusion, which is a five blade shaver that gives one of the best shaves around.
A review from shavingstuff.com shows that the Fusion, although can be slightly more expensive, gives a much more closer and comfortable shave compare to its counterpart. You can take a look at the review here (opens a new window)
HeadBlade
One of the other more dedicated head shaving brands to consider is HeadBlade. Their products are definitely designed for those who want an easy head shave.
One of their range is innovative HeadBlade shavers which resembles a lawnmower. Their shavers are acknowledged as one of the top 10 inventions of 2000 by Time magazine. Just put it on top of your head and mow it down!

Shaving Lubricant - The Other Essential
No matter how great a head shaver is, you can't get the closest shave and avoid accidental injuries and scalp burning if you don't use a shaving cream or lubricant. Shaving lubricants are also crucial to prevent razor burns and bumps. There are basically 3 main types of shaving lubricant
- Can Based
Can based shaving lubricants usually dispense in foam or gel form which contains alcohol. Ingredients like alcohol can really dry up your scalp so it's not recommended. - Tube based
Usually comes in a cream form and made from glycerin soap, which are easier on your skin, especially large surfaces like your scalp. It's a good choice for a wet shave.
Micro beads
Micro beads are one of the recent inventions for shaving cream. Utilizing small little micro beads, when you apply it forms a layer of micro sized slippery marbles on top of your scalp, making it really slippery and provides you a very comfortable shave. You won't have to worry about applying more water as it doesn't dry up and will last for your entire shave. You can check out brands like Billy Jealousy Hydroplane lotion which is widely regarded as a very good shaving lubricant.
Getting Rid of Your Hair
If you have long hair, the best way to settle it once and for all is to go to your local barber or hairdresser and ask him or her to stumble it. Cut it down as short as possible for you to shave preferably 1cm in length.
If you don't want to do that, you can get a hair clipper and prune down your hair. Any hair clippers will do because you won't be using it after you have shaven your head so if you can, borrow one instead to save costs.
Other Optional Stuff
Okay before we move along the next step, some other stuff you might want to prep up first before your first shave
- Small hand held mirror
Useful when you trying to shave the back of your head and avoiding getting cut. So get that handy and ready. - Before and After Picture
It's a good recommendation that you take a picture of your current hair before you shave it away. Good for remembrance and comparison. - Lotion
As your scalp are very sensitive to light and pollution, consider getting skin lotions that contains vitamin B and C as well as Aloe Vera. It does a good job in protecting your scalp. - Aftershave Balm
You might want to get an aftershave balm to ease your scalp after the shave.
All these stuffs are not really necessary but it would be a great help if you are shaving your head for the first time. It will definitely facilitate in your first shave.
