28 Year Old Bald Eagle

Up until a year ago I have always been a very healthy active individual. A year ago at the age of 27 I had my first child via C-section. In conjunction with my pregnancy I also suffered from kidney stones while pregnant which required surgery as well. Within weeks after giving birth I was feeling great again and ended up getting on Mirena birth control.

Three months after having the baby I began losing my hair very rapidly which I had heard and read was very normal. I couldn't believe how my hair was falling out in chunks and how my bathroom floor was littered in HAIR! Finally at 6 post- partum my hair began to grow back which made me extremely happy. I had 3 months of positive hair growth. Then, this past February, 9 months after giving birth I had surgery to remove a non-functioning gallbladder.

A month after the surgery I began losing my hair AGAIN! I had heard Mirena could also be the culprit for my hair loss so I decided to have it removed to see if that would help. It has now been 3 and 1/2 months of loosing hair at a very rapid pace. I luckily have very thick hair but more than half of my normal amount is GONE.
The doctor ran all of the hormone/thyroid tests which came back normal and wrote me a prescription for a shampoo and topical solution.

It is not working and I am beginning to panic! He told me to give it a couple more weeks and if it doesn't work he will refer me to a dermatologist. So much hair is falling out I am worried I won't have any in a couple of weeks. I have been applying mascara to my scalp to cover my bald spots and am looking for any further advice....HELP!!!

Editor’s Comments,

Hello there, Mirena has been linked to causing hair loss among users and some even complain of the severity of the hair loss due to it. Some users who had Mirena removed should usually face with continued hair loss due to the hormones still residing inside the system. It can take as long as 6 months before the hormones clear away.

Factoring in the fact that your hair grows at a slow pace, you should expect your recovery to be slow but in most cases the outcome is positive.

If you are in need of a hair loss concealer for the meantime, try Toppik or Dermmatch. Also consider whether you are suitable for supplementations like vitamin B complex as they can help balance back hormones and speed hair growth. Minoxidil 2% for women is also a good treatment option that you can evaluate. Good luck!
