Worried Young Girl

Worried Young Girl

I am a 19 year old female. I had a bad case of mono about 4 months ago which believed to be the cause of my Telogen effluvium. I have seen several doctors and all tell me the same thing, be patient, wait it out, and it will get better.

However, I'm beginning to grow sceptical. I'm handling the whole thing horribly. Part of the reason is because I'm 8 hours away from home right now at school, and without my friends and family I just feel scared and confused. I've come to dread taking showers because seeing how much hair I lose in one shower makes me nauseous.

I've tried vitamins and changed my diet but nothing works. I don’t know what to do and I want it to stop. It sounds like such a trivial thing to complain about, but I'm 19. And being a girl my hair is very important to me. I’m so scared…

Editor’s Comments,

Hi there girl. One word of advice. FOCUS. If you are having a bout of Telogen Effluvium, understand that it’s very very likely your hair will grow back to the way it was. Worrying, not showering, getting paranoid will not make it better and might even make it worse.
There are no vitamins, changing of diet that will change the course of your hair loss overnight.

Recovery will take time and you will have to accept it the best that you can because the sooner you do, the sooner you will feel better about it. In the meantime, cut your hair short, drink more water, get more rest and think positive is the best course of action to recovery.

mono and hair loss
by: Anonymous

I also was diagnosed with mono a year and half ago and my hair started to fall out after that. I went to the doctors and they checked my thyroid and that was fine. They put me on vitamins, that didnt help. I also tried nioxin, which is suppose to help, but doesn't. I also tried using apple cider vinegar, which they say is suppose to help. I am at a loss right now my hair used to be so thick. So I am taking it upon myself and trying different things, because the doctors cant give me answers.

I feel your pain

I am 23 and I have been experiencing telogen effluvium for the past 3 months. I have started to lose my eyebrows and eyelashes too :( My derm just recommended rogaine and sent me on my way. My derm also told me that in most cases, the longest it lasts is 8 months. I have cried and cried about this, but I have just decided that I will be strong and beat this. I only give myself 5 minutes a day to be upset about the hair loss because stress only makes it worse. Try and hang tight, and remember that it is only temporary!

Oh and I decided against the rogaine thing. Even though the hair loss sucks, I really think that time is the only cure.

I too am a university student away from my family. This summer in June I was diagnosed with "hypothyroidism" and put on synthroid. In November I started noticing an increase in hair loss. It's now February and I don't know if the situation is getting any better. It's all I can think about and I too dread showering or going out because I am too afraid to style my hair. I just want to know when this will stop

the same thing happend to my daughter she had a very bad case of mono she was put in the hospital for 7 days. she was sent home on a thursday from the hospital and had to move into her dorm the same weekend. this was august of 2009 in november her hair started falling out, like you she didnt want to take a shower it was shocking how much was coming out. she now just accepts the fact that she will have to have patience with the process of her hair growing back. i wish you luck.
